How Piano Nova Works

Piano Nova turns any sheet music into an interactive practice session. Upload a score, slow it down, loop the hard parts, and play along on any piano — MIDI keyboard or microphone.

1

Upload Your Score

Bring any piece you want to learn. Piano Nova accepts three formats:

  • PDF sheet music — the most common format. Our optical music recognition (OMR) engine reads the notation and converts it to a playable score.
  • Photos of printed music — snap a picture of a page from a book. The OMR engine handles the rest.
  • MusicXML / MXL files — the most accurate option. Contains all musical data and imports directly with no conversion needed.

Your uploads are private — only you can see your scores.

2

Practice at Your Pace

The app renders full sheet music notation on screen — real notation, not falling blocks. You control every aspect of practice:

  • Listen first — hear the piece played back before you touch a key
  • Adjust tempo — slow any passage to any speed
  • Loop sections — select a range of bars and repeat until solid
  • Hands separate — practice left hand, right hand, or both
  • Wait mode — the app pauses at each note until you play the correct one, on a MIDI keyboard or heard through the mic

Play Along

Connect any USB or Bluetooth MIDI keyboard — or let the mic listen to your piano (beta), acoustic pianos included. Piano Nova shows your notes in real time on a piano visualizer below the score and highlights your position in the notation.

High-fidelity piano sound is generated on-device — no latency, no internet required for playback. Works on desktop, iOS, and Android.

I love how the actual sheet music is prominent, helping me to sharpen up my sight reading skills, but the piano keys are also shown for when I need some help. The 'play' mode helps me hear how it should sound, and the 'wait' mode helps me practice at my own pace.

Works With Any Piano

Piano Nova works with any standard MIDI keyboard. On desktop, connect via USB — it's plug and play, no drivers needed. On mobile, connect via Bluetooth MIDI.

No MIDI keyboard? Turn on mic input (beta) and Piano Nova listens to your piano through the microphone — digital or fully acoustic. That's how it works on iPhone too. A MIDI keyboard remains the most precise way to play along.
